A barcode printer is a special printer for printing barcode labels, which can be attached to physical objects. Barcode printers are used to label cartons before shipment or to label retail items with barcodes, prices or other information.
Basically, two different technologies are available to print your barcodes. Direct thermal printers use a printhead to generate heat which causes a chemical reaction in a specially designed paper. Due to the heat, the paper turns black. Thermal transfer printers also use heat, but instead of reacting the paper, the heat melts a wax or resin ribbon that runs over the label material.
Comparing these two technologies, one can say that the direct thermal printers are slightly cheaper, however, the printing accessories are a little more expensive due to the special paper. On the other hand, especially for large quantities, the direct thermal printers are not recommended as the printing head can be damaged faster. Another disadvantage of the direct thermal printers is that the labels become illegible if exposed to heat, direct sunlight or chemical vapors.Many different barcode printers are available for different markets. Smaller printers are designed for retail stores and smaller shops while industrial barcode printers are used in large warehouses and manufacturing facilities. These industrial printers have large paper capacities, operate faster and have a longer service life. Also the printing quality can vary between 200 and 300 dpi resulting in a better readability of the barcodes. Most printers can be connected to any standard PC by an USB connection cable.
